The Story of Us

Scott Mills was born on November 23, 1960 in Derry, New Hampshire. He's the youngest of six: three girls whose names begin with "J" and three boys whose names (or nicknames) begin with "S." Scott lived in the same house (pictured below on the left) in the same neighborhood until after graduation when his parents downsized to a condo in Londonderry. 

Scott attended kindergarten through high school in the same school district with many of the same classmates. His father retired from Ma Bell after 38 years of service. His mother was a stay-at-home mom who held a part-time job once Scott was older. 

Debra Small was born on September 13, 1959 in Portland, Indiana. She's the oldest of four: three girls and one boy. Her parents (father, New Hampshire native / mother, Indiana native) moved to The Granite State when she was about two-and-a-half years old. Between then and age 18, Deb lived in no less than nine different locations in and around the same area of the state. Between kindergarten and graduation she attended eight schools in five school districts. Her dad, a skilled carpenter, held many different jobs both in and outside of his trade. While her mom frequently remained on the home front, she took outside work when the situation warranted it. Deb’s family intermittently called the town of Derry home. 

Scott and Deb were never neighbors in Derry, yet they attended the same kindergarten and schools one year apart, and their families saw the same doctor, used the same butcher, and were acquainted with some of the same people. They met on the job in 1980 at a circuit board factory in Manchester—he was a silk screener, she a quality control inspector.

Though they didn't become fast friends, they ultimately became the best of friends. By March of 1982, Scott and Deb were a committed couple; twenty-nine years later, their relationship is still going strong.
